Elvira "Elvie" Shirk is the sister of Francesca Valdez — the steward who lit the top curve of this same B. A former Bay Area resident, Elvie helped Francesca every step of the way toward her dream and eventual purchase of 435/443 Broadway. Where Francesca stood fiercely in the doorway, Elvie was at her side: counsel, ballast, and family. Her bulb sits directly beside her sister's, the way she stood beside her in life.
BRICKS & SWEAT: WHY IT MATTERS
A building does not change hands on its own. When Francesca began the work of transferring 435/443 Broadway to our group, Elvie played an essential role in continuing that transfer and seeing it through — the quiet, unglamorous labor of making sure a hard-won room would pass safely to the people meant to keep it open. That kind of help rarely makes the marquee, but without it the room goes dark. Elvie's care is part of why these lights have a future to come back to.
