San Francisco’s independent rooms don't survive because of luck. They survive because someone chooses to stand fiercely in the doorway and refuse to let the light go out.

In 2001, Francesca Valdez, alongside her partner Karel Pleskot, purchased the historic property at 435 Broadway. For twenty-four years, through intense economic shifts, tech bubbles, a global pandemic, and aggressive neighborhood gentrification, her unyielding stewardship as the owner of Broadway Studios, Fame Venue, and the reborn Mabuhay Gardens space fiercely safeguarded the independent venue from being converted into luxury condos or silent corporate offices.

BRICKS & SWEAT: WHY IT MATTERS

Affectionately remembered as the "Queen of Broadway," Francesca's relationship with the building began in 1976 when she modeled on its stage during the height of the punk era. Decades later, she returned to steward the building, transforming her maternal presence into a shield for the room. Her story belongs to the long line of people who did more than just admire San Francisco culture—she took on the financial, physical, and operational burden required to keep a room open for it until her passing in July 2025.

INVITATION FORWARD

Sponsoring this light carries Francesca’s protective legacy forward. By igniting the top curve of the West-facing B, you affirm that independent culture requires physical, fiercely defended rooms to survive, honoring the maternal anchor who kept the floorboards running for a generation of performers.
